NC Cooperative Extension

North Carolina Cooperative Extension has been helping limited-resource producers for more than a century by providing research-based technical information, training and assistance in sustainable farming practices and local food systems. N.C. Cooperative Extension is a strategic partnership between NC State and N.C. A&T State universities, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA), as well as state and local governments. Each university offers key Extension programs for limited-resource producers, including connecting farmers and agribusinesses with the vital research-based information and technology they need to produce high-quality crops and livestock.

With their farm-to-fork scope, Extension also provides assistance for supply chain stakeholders beyond the farm, including processors, aggregators, distributors, markets, community organizations, and consumers. With offices in every county and the Eastern Band of Cherokee, Extension serves as a bridge between North Carolinians and the universities. Research at NC State and N.C. A&T targets local issues and agricultural challenges, then Extension delivers the research discoveries directly into the hands of North Carolinians with one-on-one technical assistance, in-person and online programming, and a robust collection of resources on their website.

Whether you're looking for information about animal agriculture, marketing your farm business, or becoming an informed consumer, N.C. Cooperative Extension has the resources you need.

Small Farm Bootcamp
The goal of Small Farm Boot Camp is to provide resources to small-scale farmers and producers who are beginning a business. The curriculum is focused primarily on production and was designed to supplement the NC Farm School. It currently includes three curriculum tracks (vegetables, livestock, and fruits) with 6 to 9 modules each. In all three tracks, participants will learn about local food systems, soil health, integrated pest management, postharvest food safety, and putting a business plan to work.
Farm Planning Resources
Establishing and running a successful farm involves much more than managing crops or livestock. This Farm Planning site is meant to provide tools and resources to help new and experienced farmers best manage their business and property. Topics addressed include managing land and water, business development, taxes, liability and insurance, regulations, certifications and marketing. Extension Agents and Specialists are available to help you navigate further and answer farm-specific questions.
NC Fresh Produce Safety
This portal from NC Cooperative Extension has all of the information you need to know about fresh produce safety. Topics the site covers include the Food Safety Modernization Act, Good Agricultural Practices, water safety, and post-harvest handling.
NC Farm School
North Carolina Farm School (NCFS) is a unique strategic business planning program for aspiring, new, or transitioning farmers. NCFS utilizes an extension framework in a 4-to-6 county cluster where Extension agents play a key role in classroom presentations, group facilitation, and enterprise selection. They teach sound production practices and crop management decision making as a part of a process to deliver a fully developed business curriculum over a four-month period. These classroom hours utilize the support of the agents and the practical knowledge of local farmers to facilitate classroom learning. The classroom business sessions are reinforced with multiple farm visits
NC FarmLink
NC FarmLink is a program of NC State Extension that connects farmers, landowners, and service providers across North Carolina to farm transition resources. Transitions are vulnerable times for farms, and NC FarmLink assists new and aspiring farmers looking to transition into farming, as well as older farmers with succession planning. NC FarmLink offers a variety of tools and resources, including the NC Farmland Opportunity Database, which can be used to help connect farm seekers and landowners. They also offer free consultations to farmers and landowners.
