METRIC: POUNDS DONATED

Method: Weigh all produce before and after food distribution

  • With a scale and a 5-gallon bucket, measure how many pounds of each produce item you are donating.

  • Keep a running log of this information if you are donating on an ongoing basis!

  • Click the button to the right to download a Harvest/Donation Log example (editable Word document.)

There's a column (destination) that allows you to track where the produce is being donated. If you do a combination of sales and donations, you can keep track of produce intended for donation and sales all in one place!
Wait a minute! You might donate 100 lbs of produce, but do you know how much of that food is ACTUALLY taken?  You need this information to understand the impact of your donation.

Solution: Work closely with your food pantry/distribution site & have pantry volunteers observe how much goes to waste. If you notice that pantry shoppers are regularly skipping your produce, try to find out why. Are you growing something people don't know how to prepare, or just don't like?
