Census of agriculture

What is the Census of Agriculture?

It is a count of farms and ranches and the people who operate them in the United Sates.

It looks at land use, land ownership, producer characteristics, production practices, income, and expenditures.

Why is it important?

  • Demonstrates the value and importance of American agriculture.

  • Cooperative extension uses data to determine facility and program placement.

  • The government uses data to inform policy.

  • Producers use data to make informed decisions.

How do I get counted?

  • Anyone who operates a farm or ranch, participates in an agricultural activity, or is involved in agriculture (ie landlords) should be counted.  

  • Report forms are typically mailed to producers.

  • You can call 1-888-424-7828 if you do not receive a form.

  • The census occurs every five years, and you should update your information each time.

  • The report form asks you to report on many different types of agricultural operations. You will have to fill out information on your acreage, income, and expenditures.

Am I required to fill out a form?

If you are mailed a report from by the USDA, you are required to fill it out and return in.
