soil testing

Why should I test my soil?

  • Determine what fertilizer needs you have.

  • Determine if you need to lime your soil.

  • Learn the acidity of your soil.

  • You may not know the previous use of your land and how that can affect new crops.

  • Your land may contain contaminants.

  • Your soil may be better suited to specific crops.

Who can test my soil?

NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services tests soil for farms and home gardeners. Their tests tell you:

  • Soil pH

  • Levels of plant nutrients

  • Fertilizer recommendations

  • Lime recommendations

Private labs can test for heavy metals and contaminants. The Duke Superfund Research Center maintains a list of labs that do soil testing (see right).
