Overview:
The Cannon Foundation is an independent foundation that was established in 1943 by Charles A. Cannon, President and Chairman of Cannon Mills Company for more than 50 years. The Cannon Foundation is endowed and accepts unsolicited requests for grants, mainly for capital projects and equipment.
Deadline:
There are 4 grant cycles per year. Deadlines are:
Q1 – Request for Application by December 28, Final Grant Submission on January 5
Q2 – Request for Application by March 28, Final Grant Submission on April 5
Q3 – Request for Application by June 28, Final Grant Submission on July 5
Q4 – Request for Application by September 28, Final Grant Submission on October 5
Funding Priorities:
In order of funding provided:
Human Services
Grants are awarded to organizations and agencies engaged in human services such as crisis assistance organizations, food pantries, homeless shelters, domestic violence services, developmentally disabled support groups and child advocacy organizations.
Education
The Foundation supports private colleges and universities across the state. Community colleges operating in, or serving, Tier I counties of North Carolina are also considered. The Foundation only funds private or public K-12 schools in Cabarrus County. Education does not include outreach efforts to raise awareness of issues or concerns.
Healthcare
Grants for healthcare organizations include local hospitals as well as critical access and rural hospitals, hospices, free clinics, and agencies serving special needs populations. Mental health efforts and substance abuse providers are also included in this category.
Community
A lesser number of grants are awarded to organizations in arts and culture, historical preservation and environmental concerns. Grants to religious organizations are only made to local churches.
Geographic Location:
The Cannon Charitable Interests serve organizations across NC, principally in rural areas, with a special emphasis on their home area of Cabarrus and adjacent counties.

The average grant amount in North Carolina is approximately $70,465.
The average national grant amount was $68,714 over the last 5 years.
Requirements:
Organizations must have provided services in North Carolina for a minimum of five years.
Organizations must be 501(c)(3) public charities.
Local government agencies and local churches may be considered.
Request for Application forms are accepted beginning six weeks before the deadline but must be submitted no later than the close of business on the dates listed in the table above. When the deadlines fall on a weekend or holiday, the deadline shifts to the next business day.
