Aetna Cultivating Healthy Community Grants

Overview:

For the Cultivating Healthy Communities Grant Program, Aetna provides funding to local nonprofits across the United States aiming to create and inspire healthier lifestyles. This is a highly competitive funding opportunity with a two-stage application process.

 

Deadline:

Typically, the first deadline falls in mid-April of each year. The second stage of the application is due around

mid-June of the same year.

 

Funding Priorities:

Focus areas and examples of activities for each area follow:
 

Built Environment

  • Tactical Urbanism such as small parks, car-free days, and pop-up markets

  • Bicycle education, safety, sharing, or parking projects
     

Community Safety

  • Community education to identify and respond to public health or safety concerns

  • Coordination between residents and police to respond to health and safety concerns
     

Environmental Exposure

  • Education of parents or teachers of young children about sources and effects of contaminants

  • Community training and mobilization to identify environmental hazards
     

Healthy Behaviors

  • Cooking and nutrition education classes

  • Fitness or mindfulness activities

  • Community and home gardening activities
     

Social/Economic Factors

  • Technical assistance or jobs training to health food retailers, including urban farmers or corner stores

  • Inventory, display, and marketing improvement


Policy-focused and resident-led projects

  • Air quality policy

  • Parks policy

  • Food policy

  • Traffic and streets policy
     

Geographic Location:

Aetna Foundation provides grants and donations to communities statewide.
 

Grant Size:

Applicants can request between $50,000 and $100,000 for the entire project period.
 

Requirements:

This program brings in applications through annual Requests for Proposals.

Aetna Foundation funding is available to 501(c)(3) organizations or similar tax-exempt groups and educational institutions.
